UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND

ABOUT THIS UNIVERSITY:

The University of Queensland (UQ) is one of Australias premier learning and research institutions.
It is the oldest university in Queensland and has produced almost 180,000 graduates since opening in 1911.

Its graduates have gone on to become leaders in all areas of society and industry.
UQ is one of the three Australian members of the global Universitas 21 alliance.

This group aims to enhance the quality of university outcomes through international benchmarking and a joint venture e-learning project with The Thomson Corporation.

UQ is proud to be a founding member of the national Group of Eight (Go8) a coalition of leading Australian universities, intensive in research and comprehensive in general and professional education.

Collectively, Group of Eight members account for 70 percent of all research income in Australia's university system, enroll more than half of all higher degree by research students, hold over 90 percent of US patents for inventions and generate 80 percent of spin-off companies created by Australian universities.

UQ is a pacesetter in discovery and translational research across a broad spectrum of exciting disciplines, ranging from bioscience and nanotechnology to mining, engineering, social science and humanities.

Its eight internationally significant research institutes are draw cards for an ever-expanding community of scientists, researchers and commercialization experts.

UQ is noted for supporting early- and mid-career researchers, as seen in our commitment to research training; in 2010, UQ expects to celebrate its 9000th PhD graduation.

In 2009, 4230 Research Higher Degree students were enrolled at UQ (3720 PhD and 510 MPhils). A total of 493 PhDs and 57 Phil’s were awarded.

UQ offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs that are informed by the latest research and delivered in state-of-the-art learning spaces.

Its teachers have won more Australian Awards for University teaching than any other Australian university.

Today, UQ has more than 40,700 students who study across its four main campuses in southeast Queensland: St Lucia, Ipswich, Gatton and Herston.

Staff and students from more than 120 nations are valued in its multicultural community, which celebrates excellence in all aspects of scholarship.

On a variety of measures it is one of the top three or four research universities in the country.
UQ's strength in research is evident in the many joint and collaborative research centres associated with the university.
The Queensland Bioscience Precinct on the St Lucia campus houses scientists from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the Institute for Molecular Biosciences to form one of the largest biomedical research clusters in Australia.
In addition, UQ is involved in biomedical translational research at the Diamantina Institute of Cancer and Metabolic Medicine (DI) and the University of Queensland Centre of Clinical Research (UQCCR).

RANKINGS:
According to The Times Higher-QS World University Rankings 2007, UQ is the only Queensland university in the top 50 (ranked 33rd along with the National University of Singapore), and one of only five Australian universities in the top 200.

These six higher ranking institutions together with UQ and the University of Adelaide also form the Group of Eight consortium, which consists of the top eight Australian research universities.
The University was independently ranked as one of Australia's best universities in the 2007 edition of The Good Universities Guide; receiving a maximum five-star rating in six key performance indicators.
These include student demand, positive graduate outcomes (reflecting both graduate employment and going on to further study), staff qualifications, research grants, research intensivity and toughness to get in (specifically for the St Lucia campus).

CAMPUSES & LOCATIONS:
