Name: Venkatesh Krishnamoorthy

My background:B.A. Sociology, PSG Arts, Coimbatore; Sales Assistant, Landmark Chennai, PGDM IIM Calcutta, 8 years work and enterpreneural experience, in software industry. CEO, Maarga Systems Pvt Ltd.

Well! I would like to begin my story with this tag line, "If I can do it, so can you!".

Mine is not the typical "IIT-D or BITS or REC with work-ex at Infosys or Wipro" making it to an IIM story. Here is my detailed background and the things that I did to get into IIM Calcutta.

I hail from Coimbatore. Did my schooling in Coimbatore and passed XII Standard (TN State Board) securing a little over 60%. Subequently, I joined PSG Arts College and completed B.A. Sociology securing 59% aggregate. My interests were mostly non-academic during those three years. I was an avid reader and excelled in organizing a variety of events in the college, which were co-curricular / vocational in nature.

While in my final year at PSG, I took CAT. This was in 1990. I got calls from IIM-A and XLRI. Thanks to the fact that I did not have any guidance for GD/PI preparation, I ended up not converting either of the calls. After graduation, I moved to Chennai and got my first job as a sales assistant at Landmark Book Shop. A couple of months into the job, I realized that I had more fire in my belly and wanted to pursue a career in the field of advertisement. I started hunting for jobs at Ad agencies. Much to my chagrin, I met with negative response from most agencies. However, things took a turn when I managed to meet the branch head of one of the leading ad agencies. The branch head was far from polite to me. He told me in plain simple terms that unless I had an MBA degree, I should not be aspiring to get a job in an advertising.

Summary of my prep strategy
I took agency head's words quite seriously and started preparing for CAT. I did a lot of slogging for over 6 months and cracked CAT. My Math was pretty okay and my English was very good. I solved almost every single Mock CAT that I could lay my hands on. By the time I took CAT, I would have solved over 30 Mock CATs. I used to spend three to four hours after each of the tests pouring over how I could have done things better. After the 20th or 22nd test, I had a "great feel" for at least 25% of the questions and even knew which of the four answer choices is likely to be the answer without actually going about solving them. I stopped my preparation on the Friday before CAT. On Sunday morning I wanted to be in the best of my moods. I did what I like a lot. I took a long drive on the Marina Beach stretch, around 7:30 in the morning. (It could be different things for different people, smoking a Gold Flake Kings for some, having a coffee for others or listening to your favourite song). Out of the 180 questions in CAT 1991, I remember attempting over 175. The last 30 of the 175 were pure calculated guesses, as I was by then confident that I had done reasonable justice to the paper.

I got calls from IIM A, B, C and L. Thanks to being in Chennai, I had the first opportunity to prepare seriously for the GD and PI. And that was probably the first time I was interacting face to face with someone who was an IIM grad. The tips and goading really helped me polish my GD/PI skills. I got admissions from IIM B, C and L. I joined IIM C in 1992 and passed out in 1994. The two years at IIM C is worth reliving. Given another chance, I sure would opt for IIM C.

Post IIM-C
Two years went past in a giffy. Campus placement - I got placed in Wipro Systems, Marketing. I shifted out of Wipro in a couple of years to California Software and then to Trigent Systems, USA. Equipped with these experience, I took up the responsibility of heading the Indian operations of Photon Infotech. Two years later, I have very recently started out on my own - Maarga Systems (http://www.maargasystems.com).

Well, if someone had told me in 1990 that I will be heading a software company in 10 years time, I am not sure I would have believed him. That is the kind of career transformation an MBA degree offers. It is not just the money; it is much more. It offers dream careers which, otherwise, were out of reach for most of us.

Though, mine is a slightly atypical story, I am not an exception to the rule. Many of my classmates, irrespective of whether they are engineers or not, have had similar enriching experience in one form or the other.

I wish all of you success in your pursuit of an MBA.

Name: Manisha Bhatia

My background: B.A. Corporate, Ethiraj College, Chennai. Ist year NMIMS, Mumbai. Planning to specialize in Finance and Marketing.

With just five months left before Dec 9, 2001, I started my preparations. There were two things which were absolutely clear in my mind. This is, what I have always wanted to do and that there was to be only one chance in which I could prove myself.

When I started going for the coaching classes, I felt unsure, vague and even terrified. I was low on self confidence. The entire batch as I saw had a few brain boxes (u recognise those types on sight) and a few people who had attempted these exams earlier and finally people like me. On a deeper observation, I found that everyone was scared like me....the serious ones, I mean. That is what gave me the impetus to work harder. That was where I started having an edge over others. I prepared for topics in advance. I approached the profs who used to take classes with my doubts. That was none the easier with me. I am a shy person and takes a lot for me to approach someone. But above all, I took everything that was told in the class seriously.

I prepared the way I was told. I read newspapers, magazines, novels......anything which could enrich my vocabulary and add on to my knowledge of current affairs. Eventually confidence started to build up. It only made me work harder. Honestly, there is no substitute for hard work. And the results started to show. I was sharper and more observant. Those moments of self doubt still persisted. It was then that I started planning for the mock exams I took. I experimented and planned my stratergies which suited me. Of course, I needed lot of guidance which I got from a lot of sources. There were many people who stood behind me and many people tried to discourage me. But I was optimistic, cause I firmly believed in my goals.

I really mixed up with a lot of fellow students and the faculty as well. Their experiences brought a few things in a better perspective. Also, I made a definite list of my strengths and weaknesses. This act of spelling out my strengths and weaknesses on paper really helped me a lot. And I put my heart and soul in improving thoses weak areas.

I cleared the written tests of MICA, BIM - Trichy, NMIMS and LIBA. During mock GD and interviews, I consulted a lot of people and built a strong plan for myself. This process is one I felt and put me through a series of difficult and some overpowering emotions. But it is the way you deal with them that helps you clear these exams. And of course, singleminded hard work. I got admissions into MICA, LIBA and NMIMS.

I wish all of you success in your pursuit of an MBA.

Name: Narasimhan Santhanam

My background: B Tech IIT Madras, PGDM IIM Calcutta, 8 years work ex, in software, consulting and internet industries, and as an entrepreneur

I cracked CAT in a rather normal manner.

I had placed a lot of faith on the right kind of preparation...so I took a correspondence course and slogged through it...I went through the entire course once, and did all the tests once again...

Whatever the faculty who prepared the material asked me to do, I did...the logic was simple...one had to pick up the smart tricks from someone, and I did not know anyone better than the faculty...

Though I was a bit unlucky during the exam because of which I lost about 4-5 minutes ( my q paper did not have some sheets in the middle), I think I was still able to get through only because of the rigorous preparation...I guess being from an IIT helped a bit as it gives you that small extra bit of confidence, but that is not good enough, at least it would not have been good enough for me...

As for the education at IIM (Calcutta) itself, it provided me the following:

1.It certainly widened my horizons...I feel that not only can I talk sophisticated terms like "broad perspective", I can also to some extent think of issues that are critical to an organisation's success, mainly because of the education at IIM Calcutta

2.It provided me with a strong network of contacts...many of my friends today hold responsible and in some cases very important roles in prestigious companies around the world

3.It provided me with quite a strong "brand" which I could either use to take business risks (which I did when i co-founded an internet strartup), or to get exciting and well-paying jobs. Essentially, it gave me that amount of backing with which I can be a lot more relaxed while looking for opportunities than those without that degree...
this is my story...

CAT 2008 RESERVATIONS Criteria

What Reservations Criteria does CAT 2008 follows ?

As per the Government of India requirements, 15% of the seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) and 7½% for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates. In addition, 27% of seats are reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBC) candidates belonging to the "Non-Creamy" layer. However, the implementation of this 27% reservation for such OBC candidates will be undertaken by each IIM in a phased manner.

3% seats are reserved for Persons with Disability (PWD). The three categories of disability are: a) low-vision/blindness, b) hearing impairment, and c) locomotor disability/cerebral palsy.
Candidates belonging to SC/ST/PWD categories are required to enclose a photocopy of their caste/category certificate at the time of submission of CAT application form.

Candidates belonging to "Non-Creamy" OBC category are required to enclose a photocopy of the certificate to this effect as per the suggested format available in CAT Bulletin.

The candidates belonging to categories for which seats are reserved need to note and read carefully the eligibility requirements before applying. It should be noted that while it is the endeavour of IIMs that the candidates belonging to SC/ST/PWD/Non-Creamy OBC categories join the Programme in proportions mandated by the law, they have to meet the minimum eligibility criteria and a certain minimum level of performance in the admission process. The candidates should read carefully the description of admission process followed by each IIM in CAT Bulletin.

What is the Admission Procedure for CAT 2008 ?

One of the major Question appearing in IIM aspirants mind is What is the selection or Admission Procedure ?

This article provides information about frequently asked questions about the admission process followed by IIMs for their post-graduate Programmes subsequent to CAT. It is therefore, important for the candidates to read this article carefully.

1.Performance in CAT is an important input in the admission process and is the primary basis for shortlisting candidates for the second round of admission process, which comprises of group discussion and/or personal interview. Candidates should note that it is important to perform well relative to other candidates in each section of the test as the scores in each section and the overall score are used to short list the candidates for the second round. These scores may also be used for final ranking as well. In addition to the performance in CAT, IIMs may use academic performance, relevant work experience and other similar inputs for ranking and shortlisting candidates for group discussions and personal interviews.

2. Please note that each IIM shortlists candidates for Group Discussions (GD) and/or Personal Interviews (PI) independent of other IIMs. Hence it is possible to observe variations in the list of candidates shortlisted by different IIMs. For more details, candidates are advised to read carefully the admission process related information of each IIM, as given in section 4 of the CAT Bulletin and on the web sites of respective IIMs.

3. Details of candidates shortlisted by different IIMs for group discussion and/or interview will be made available on CAT website (www.catiim.in) on January 9, 2009. Shortlisted candidates would also be sent letters from the respective IIMs. GD/PI are conducted by each IIM separately.

4. After the GD/PI round, admission offers are made by IIMs to successful candidates. The ranking and final selection is based on a diverse set of attributes and may include performance in CAT, performance in GD/PI, academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular achievements, work experience etc. The weights given to each of these attributes may vary across IIMs as the admission process of each IIM, subsequent to CAT is independent.

5. Disclosure of information about the admission process at IIMs is driven by concerns, which at times conflict with each other. The IIMs would like the admission process to be transparent. At the same time, IIMs would wish to protect the privacy of individual candidates and confidentiality of the process to prevent abuse. Based on these considerations, the performance of an individual is not made available to any other person. Similarly, the performance of candidates in GD/PI including assessment of attributes mentioned under paragraph 4 of this box is not disclosed to anyone to prevent exercise of undue pressure on the panelists
participating in the admission/selection process. Moreover, each IIM exercises its own discretion in disclosing weights assigned to diverse sets of attributes mentioned under paragraph 4 above. To ensure that the resultant lack of transparency does not in any way affect the candidates negatively, adequate care is taken in formation of panel, development of objective criteria for assessment, random allocation of candidates to a panel and other such measures.

6.Candidates, who appeared in GD/PI will be able to view whether they have been offered admission by different IIMs on April 10, 2009 by visiting the websites of respective IIMs. Admission offer letter would be sent to all successful candidates by different IIMs for which the candidates have been selected. Candidates, who are offered admission, need to confirm their acceptance by completing all the required formalities by May 1, 2009. Some candidates may also be placed on the waiting list initially on April 10, 2009. Offers to candidates on the waiting list would depend upon the number of successful candidates accepting the offer made by an IIM.

Instruction For Candidates Applying For CAT 2008

This article provides information about frequently asked questions and queries about submission of CAT 2008 application forms. It also spells out the processes followed by IIMs up to Common Admission Test (CAT) and issue of CAT scorecard. It is, therefore, important for the candidates to read this article carefully.

1. CAT Application Forms are sold or sent (along with Bulletins) only to the candidates, who are interested in appearing for CAT 2008
and are applying to one of the Programmes of IIMs. The CAT Application Form sold or sent in the name of one person cannot
be used by someone else for applying to IIMs. CAT Application Forms and Bulletins, once sold, would not be bought back by
the banks or by the IIMs. CAT Bulletin can also be accessed or downloaded from the CAT website (www.catiim.in).

2. CAT Bulletin has considerable information on how to fill up the form. Please read the bulletin carefully before filling-in the form. The candidates
should ensure that they meet the eligibility criteria of the Programme(s), which they have applied for, that the form is complete in all respects
and that they have read the checklist in the CAT Bulletin before forwarding the application to the concerned IIM.

3.The candidate may note that his/her application would be summarily rejected if the application is incomplete in any
respect, specifically if documents supporting qualifications and category are not provided, any mandatory field is left blank, the form is not signed, photograph is not attached or the candidate fails to meet the eligibility criteria. No corrections will be permitted after submission of the application form. However, in case a candidate identifies any mistake in the submitted form, he/she may buy and submit a fresh form duly filled-in by September 5, 2008.

4. A candidate can check the information related to the admission process from CAT website (www.catiim.in) at different stages (a) whether the application form has been received, (b) Allotted test registration number and the CAT venue where a candidate will appear for CAT 2008. A candidate can also check the CAT website (www.catiim.in) for information related to (c) whether the application form has been accepted/rejected (d) CAT 2008 scores, (e) whether the candidate has been short listed for Group
Discussions and Personal Interview of different IIMs, and (f) whether the candidate has been offered admission by different IIMs. CAT-takers can also access their CAT-2008 scores by using SMS facility of mobile phones. For SMS, candidate can type `CAT test registration number date of birth (ddmmyy)' or `CAT test registration number application number" for example: "CAT 5370082 030482" or "CAT 5370082 123456" and SMS to "57333". IIMs have also made arrangements to deliver results by e-mail. Candidates who wish to get their results by e-mail should register themselves between October 17, 2008 and November 30, 2008 by sending an SMS to 57333 as follows: `CAT test registration number date of birth (ddmmyy) email id' Please note that only one e-mail id will be registered against a test registration number.

5. While CAT Bulletin and the CAT website would provide most of the information, a candidate may still have queries about filling the application form. In case a candidate needs further assistance, he/she can call up the concerned IIM. An interactive voice response system (IVRS) would help in resolving the queries. The IVRS numbers given in this advertisement would allow the candidate to access this system. Please note that the IVRS provides answers to common queries related to admission process and IIMs are not
responsible for any misunderstanding created by the IVRS in the mind of any candidate. IIMs, however, own up the responsibility for written responses to queries raised through e-mail/ letters, for which addresses have been provided in this advertisement.

6. In case a candidate has any special query which cannot be addressed to by the IVRS or the CAT Bulletin, the candidate can write to the admission office of the concerned IIM quoting the application number before receipt of admit card and test registration number after receipt of admit card. The candidate must retain a photocopy of filled-in application form and the admit card as long as the candidate remains interested in the admission process of the IIMs.

7. In case the candidate chooses to write to any IIM, he/she may send an e-mail or may use any other mode of written communication. Please note that no IIM official will directly answer queries of the candidates over phone.

8. Candidates belonging to SC/ST/PWD/Non-Creamy OBC categories are requested to indicate their status while filling-in their form and enclose supporting document(s) as a proof that they belong to the specified category. Please note that no change in category would be allowed after the last date of receipt of application form. In the absence of any supporting document or inappropriate supporting document, the candidates having paid full CAT Application fee would be treated as candidates belonging to the `Others' category. The applications from candidates who had only paid half the fee but who do not submit any supporting
document(s) or who submit inappropriate supporting document(s), will be rejected.

9. Admit cards of eligible candidates, whose applications are complete in all respect, would be despatched beginning October 13, 2008. Those who do not receive admit cards by October 31, 2008 should immediately write to the concerned IIM quoting their application number.

10. On the day of the test, candidates should reach the test venue by 9:45 AM. Please note that no candidate would be allowed to enter the venue after 10:00 AM. Please do not carry any valuable articles such as cell phones, calculators, pens etc., as only admit card, HB pencils and erasers are required for the test and all other articles would have to be left outside the test hall at candidate's own risk.

11. Any attempt to impersonate or indulge in any other malpractice during the test or while filling up the form would not only lead to immediate and automatic disqualification from the admission process of IIMs but may also lead to prosecution. Please note that detection of such malpractice at any stage including after obtaining admission to any IIM would lead to immediate and automatic disqualification or expulsion.

12. CAT scores of all valid candidates, appearing in CAT 2008, will be available on the CAT website on 9th January, 2009. Subsequently, Score Cards would be despatched to all the candidates. Adequate care is taken to ensure that there are no mistakes in reading the answer sheet. There is no provision for re-evaluation of the answer sheet of any candidate. The candidates should ensure that they have read Section 3 of the CAT Bulletin carefully regarding the precautions to be taken while answering the questions.
